Big, Bad and Fast. That is what used to be the cry from the streets when it came to gas scooters. These days, people everywhere are parking their SUV�s and hopping on a gas scooter for their short trips. How do you choose the right gas scooter? The answers are simpler than you think.

Choosing a gas scooter is not rocket science, but it does take some thought. You need to determine where your going to ride it, whether you want an electric start, as well as how much you want to spend on it. Taking into consideration these primary factors, you can make a decisive decision that will not leave you with a gas scooter that does not meet your particular need.

Where are you going to ride your gas scooter? Gas scooters come in two main types; On road and off road. Depending on where you plan to ride your gas scooter, will determine which type you purchase.

Off-Road: Gas scooters that are used off-road will have a stronger reinforced frame with a more robust suspension system. Off road enthusiasts race through trails and dirt tracks and some have jumps, so the gas scooter must be able to handle this type of abuse. The off road gas scooters will have fat knobby tires, averaging in sizes from eight to ten inches. Most off road gas scooters will have a mid level suspension system usually towards the back of the footplate to absorb impact and prevent the plate and frame from breaking.

On-Road: The on-road, or street gas scooters are most popular. These gas scooters are used for every type of transportation from getting to the office, school, going to the store as well as racing. There are basic types that blue collar workers and college kids use to get to their destination without having to rely on an automobile. There are performance gas scooters that are for the extremist and can hit forty-five to fifty miles per hour. Street gas scooters come with a variety of options and vary in the types of wheels that they have. The wheels on the street scooters can be anywhere from six inches up to ten inches. Street gas scooter tires are either slicks for racing, or grooved tread for road grip.

Another thing to consider is if you want the advantage of an electric start. Electric start gas scooters are primarily available on the street gas scooters. With an electric start, you need a battery. The battery and start coil are housed under the scooter footplate n a built in box. This type of setup is more convenient. However, this adds considerable weight to the scooter. You will not see an electric start on a performance gas scooter. They don�t want to be bogged down by all the extra weight.

How much do you want to spend on your gas scooter? The basic street gas scooters are relatively cheap for all that you get. The average adult street gas scooter will only set you back a couple of hundred dollars. While a performance gas scooter for either off road or on road racing can get as high as the thousands. Spend your money wisely.

Let's Look At More gas scooters

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

So let's take a look at some safety ideas. Wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads. Children under the age of 12 should not ride motorized scooters. Avoid heavy traffic at all costs. Don't ride at night. If you have to ride at night, be sure you have a good headlight and a taillight as well as side reflectors. Wear sturdy shoes that have a good sole on them. If your helmet doesn't have a face shield, invest in a good pair of goggles are safety glasses. Avoid gravel or uneven roads. Know the local laws. Have insurance. Take a class on scooter safety. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the center stand to hold it down. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not, you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

Double check all connections, then crank for 10-15 seconds. Did it start? Do you hear any popping, like the engine is trying to run? Most scooters will not start if you apply throtte while cranking. Honda scooters tend to start easier if you apply throttle just as the engine catches. Most Yamaha scooters will not accept any throttle at all until they warm up a bit. If the scooter catches, but doesn't start, let it rest ~15 seconds before trying again.

The medical scooter with three wheels is designed to carry weight up to 220 to 250 pounds. The four wheeled medical scooter can hold a maximum weight of 350 to 400 pounds. When compared with three wheel medical scooters, four wheel medical scooters are heavy and bulky. Both the three wheel and four wheel medical scooters can be folded into 3 or 4 sections after use. Thus, medical scooters can be easily carried on cars, vans or other vehicles.

There are both electrical powered and gas powered medical scooters. Among these two power modes, the electrical powered medical scooter is the most popular type in the market. This can be used for long and short distance drives. The gas powered medical scooter is not permitted in all states in America, because of the pollution it causes.

Medical scooters come with various features, to help the physically disabled to operate the vehicle easily. Some features of medical scooters are auto-latching lockup mechanism, swivel seat, headlight, basket and seat with different levels of adjustment. To meet individual taste, medical scooters are available in assorted colors and models.

Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not, you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changing the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Tuning for best performance can be a lot of work!

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

Have a bit of patience and do some research to find materials and instructions that clearly let you know what you need to do and what tools to do it with. First, remove all of the rubber and gaskets or they will get damaged. After a 20 minute soaking in carb dip, I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar or a piano string, a strand of copper electrical wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're diligent.

Save Money With An Electric Scooter

Electric scooters are beginning to pop up everywhere. With the high price of gas, many people are even looking past the traditional gas scooter in their quest for more savings. The question, of course, is whether or not an electric scooter is a good buy. How much will that 'economical' scooter cost you in the long run. Follow along as we take a look at answering those questions.

First of all, how much is it going to cost to buy the two wheeled electric scooter itself. In basic terms the weight of the rider is an initial consideration. Most scooters bear riders in the 180 to 200 pound range. If you're a lot lighter than that then you may get away with a low-end scooter costing around $200. If you weigh in the given range, you can probably get away with a $300 electric scooter. There are scooters built to accommodate heavier riders and they obviously cost more to buy but you get the basic idea.

Next is the running cost of an electric scooter. Speed will be a consideration in using up the energy but most electric scooters run at 10 mph with higher end models doing over 30 mph. Terrain will also have to be considered. If you live in an area with any significant hills then you are advised to spend to get at least a 350 watt electric motor. But we want to know in general terms, in a normal city environment, how much will it cost to run the electric scooter.

Gasoline scooters average about 70 to 100 miles per gallon depending on the variations noted above. Some people report using $6-$10 a week using a gas scooter in quick commutes. That's a considerable difference versus an automobile considering an average Honda Accord probably gets about 40 miles per gallon. On the other hand [plugging into a 120 volt outlet] typical electrical recharging costs for a year run from $73-$150. Other estimates put recharging costs at about 10% of the price of gasoline to run a gas powered scooter. Obviously an electric scooter can offer tremendous cost savings.

And considering that an electric scooter has no combustion engine, no belts, no carburetor no oil changes and no spark plugs, cost of maintenance is almost nil. This all adds up to illustrate that the running costs of an electric scooter is incredibly low. And you normally don't have to get a license or insurance to run it and parking becomes free! Electric scooters are great for the environment and your pocketbook.

So, adding the cost of ownership to the cost of running an electric scooter, they offer a great alternative to a gas guzzling vehicle and even a low-cost gas scooter as well.

What's With All The Voltage?

Every day, customers either come in the store or call and ask about this scooter and that scooter. I ask everyone the same thing. What are you planning on using your scooter for? Some as transportation to work or school and more than most, the scooter is for their kids. But what scooter should you buy and what�s the big deal about voltage?

Electric scooters over the years have evolved tremendously. One thing that voltage plays a major role in is output power. The more voltage, the more output power that is available; but that is not the sole factor that determines power and that is not the only role that voltage plays in your electric scooters.

Lets start with the traditional 12 volt system. Now-a-days, the small kids electric scooters are single twelve volt systems. As you increase in wattage, that is how many watts of power that is generated by your electric scooter engine, the more juice that is required to power that engine more efficiently.

With the interest in faster electric scooters, the 24 volt system was introduced. The 24 volt system is traditionally a trickle-charge system where two 12 volt batteries are simultaneously connected and then the whole system runs the engine, as well as any other add-ons that you have on your electric powered scooter. If your scooter has the traditional headlight, brake light, turn signals and the such, then your battery setup is more than likely a trickle-charge system and these extra add-ons along with the motor require more juice than a simple 12 volt system would be able to support.

The traditional electric powered scooter that has all the extras will be either a 24 volt system or for the heavy duty and longer lasting electric scooters, you will get a much better setup with a 36 volt system.

The higher voltage systems provide more power to carry more weight farther. With a 24 v0lt system, your average electric powered scooter can travel for about ten to fifteen miles; if you�re lucky. The 36 volt systems have reached a maximum of twenty-five to even thirty miles on a single charge. There are some 48 volt systems out there that can travel up to thirty-five miles on a single charge, by those are few.

Simple comparison: Take a 24 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put a two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 12-18 miles, depending on the scooter. Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

I have trouble getting my scooter on its centerstand. Like a lot of other things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the centerstand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the centerstand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

Compression Check. If you just acquired your scooter, you should first do a full inspection before you try to get it running. If this is the case, I'd do a compression check first because it's easy to do. First, check the quantity and condition of the engine oil. Hook up or purchase a good battery. Leave out the spark plug and crank the scooter for ~5 seconds. This helps to circulate the oil. Let it set for ~15 seconds and then do it again. It's not a good idea to continuously crank the starter because it can overheat and wear out prematurely.

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

The unburned fuel/oil mixture builds up in the exhaust pipe along with carbon over time. If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. Got spark? First check for spark. There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way is to remove the spark plug and put it back in the spark plug cap. Then ground it to the engine - you should be able to lay it against a non-painted portion of the engine. Make sure there is good metal-to-metal contact. In a semi darkened area, attempt to start the scooter. You should see a definite spark at the tip of the spark plug. It's hard to see in direct light. If the color of the spark is blue, that means it's a strong spark. A white color is less strong, and a yellow color is weak. Most scooter starting systems are a bit weak (compared to cars). Even a yellow spark should start your scooter just fine. Next, the spark must occur at the right time. Just about all scooters made since around 1980 have electonic ignition. These systems rarely can be set. This is good news. After working on maybe 50 scooters, I've never seen one go out of time. Scooters with points are another matter. You'll have to follow the timing procedure in the manual to get the timing correct. In general, the spark occurs just before the piston reaches the top of it's stroke. There is a slight delay between the spark plug fire and the fuel-air mixture ignition. That's why the spark occurs a little early. Most ignition systems have an advance unit build in, so that as the engine speeds up the time of the spark retards a little bit and helps the engine fire the mixture at the proper time.

My Idle Runs Too High. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise 1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not, you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Remove The Carburetor & Clean It. There are a lot of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carburetor that must be kept clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully, take the carburetor apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter). The carb has tiny passages that can get gummed up. Your scooter will not run correctly if the carburetor isn't completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store).

Run at least a pint of gas through to help flush the system. If you don't get a flow then it's likely your petcock is clogged. You have to remove it before you can disassemble and clean it. Carefully reinstall it on the gas tank or you could get a gas leak. Reassemble everything and try to start the scooter. It will take several seconds of cranking to get the gas to work its way from the gas tank to the carburetor.
